Acupuncture, a natural treatment for hot flushes
Acupuncture can reduce the frequency and intensity of hot flushes caused by the menopause. A hormone-free, effective solution.
The menopause is a period of major change for women’s bodies. An inevitable passage around the age of fifty, it can last from two to five years and bring its share of discomfort and disturbances, both physical and psychological. The menopause is not an illness, but a condition linked to the cessation of ovarian function, which leads to a hormonal imbalance. Acupuncture can help you to combat these discomforts and live better through this period of change.
What are the symptoms of the menopause?
The average age of menopause in North America is 51. The pre-menopause is when menstrual cycles start to become spaced out and more irregular. This stage occurs on average between the ages of 39 and 51.
Hot flushes, night sweats, sleep disorders, fatigue, weight gain, migraines, bloating, vaginal dryness and mood disorders are the main clinical signs encountered. All these symptoms vary greatly from person to person. In Canada, between 20% and 30% of women experience moderate to severe symptoms.

In some cases, these symptoms can become a real problem. Getting through a working day becomes a major challenge when hot flushes occur every twenty minutes and are accompanied by profuse sweating. Nights can be restless when hot flushes force you to change your nightwear. There are a number of ways to help you through this period.
Menopausal hot flushes, which can occur several times a day and make women sweat profusely at night, have an impact on well-being and sleep. Hormone replacement therapy based on oestrogen is effective, but not all women want to take it or are entitled to do so, as there are many contraindications. The same applies to phytotherapy based on oestrogenic plants such as soya or hops. So it’s always a good idea to have a hormone-free solution on hand.

Acupuncture, a natural treatment for hot flushes
A study at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center found that acupuncture treatment can reduce the frequency of hot flashes and night sweats associated with menopause by up to 36%.
More than 170 American women aged 45 to 60 suffering from at least 4 symptoms a day (flushing or night sweats) received up to 20 weekly acupuncture sessions, spread over 6 months.
At the end of this period, their vasomotor symptoms had been reduced by an average of 36.7%, whereas they had increased by 6% in the women who had received nothing. The improvement was significant after just 3 sessions, and the effect was greatest after an average of 8 sessions.
The benefits of acupuncture
Acupuncture is a branch of Chinese medicine that dates back over 5,000 years, and aims to restore balance to the various spheres of our body. More and more clinical research is demonstrating its effectiveness in dealing with internal disorders and dysfunctions.
Acupuncture helps to restore the body’s natural balance by influencing the endocrine systems (the famous hormones) and the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems, thereby having an impact on hot flushes, night sweats, stress, insomnia and certain mood or digestive disorders.
With no side effects, acupuncture involves inserting fine sterile (single-use) needles into specific areas of the body to stimulate general circulation. In this way, the procedure supports certain body functions that are in need or frees up certain over-stimulated organs.
The results are rapid and can have a wider impact on your state of health. In general, between three and five treatments are enough to greatly reduce the intensity of symptoms. Follow-up every three months is recommended to prevent symptoms returning.
