What causes sciatic
nerve pain?
Sciatica is caused by a pinched sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve starts in the lumbar spine, passes through the middle of the buttock, and runs down the back of the legs. The jamming can come from a variety of sources. Sometimes, a herniated disc or bony growth will pinch the sciatic nerve, causing sciatica.

How Acupuncture Can Help Sciatica
Acupuncture works by relaxing tight muscles, improving blood circulation, regulating the nervous system, and releasing neurotransmitters to reduce pain.
Chinese medicine is indeed an effective treatment for sciatica without the side effects of prescribed painkillers such as NSAIDs and muscle relaxants. It is also a safe, non-surgical treatment that can relieve the pain of sciatica.
A systematic review of acupuncture for sciatica shows that acupuncture improves sciatica symptoms better than treatment with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Acupuncture also helps reinforce the effects of medications that may be prescribed for sciatica, thereby reducing the dose and mitigating side effects.
Acupuncture for sciatic nerve relief
This hollistic approach can provide fast, effective relief from sciatic nerve pain. It works on 3 levels:
- First, acupuncture reduces sciatic nerve pain. It is one of the most effective non-pharmacological means of reducing pain. Indeed, it has a strong capacity to modulate pain and thus relieve sciatica.
- What’s more, acupuncture induces a high degree of muscle relaxation, reducing tension in the piriformis muscle and providing relief from sciatic nerve pain. Acupuncture also helps increase range of motion, which is restricted during an episode of sciatica.
- Finally, acupuncture reduces symptoms associated with sciatica, such as tingling or numbness in the legs.
